What is Cryotherapy?
If you’ve ever had a skin growth “frozen off” you’re already familiar with cryotherapy. Our cryotherapy chamber uses special technology to bathe you in icy cold liquid nitrogen for 2-3 minutes, leaving you reinvigorated.
While in your cryotherapy session, you stand in a single-person chamber. The temperature inside the chamber is carefully regulated at all times, and your head rises above the heavier nitrogen vapors to allow you to breathe normal air.
Cryotherapy has its origins in Japan, where, in the 1970s, it was developed and refined to help alleviate some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. At Bay Area Body, we love cryotherapy because so many of our patients how good it makes them feel!
What happens during a cryotherapy session?
Each session takes place in a “cryosauna” in a private treatment room in our San Francisco office. You’ll be asked to completely disrobe and be provided with gloves, socks, and slippers to protect your more sensitive tissues. Each treatment lasts between 2 and 3 minutes — and because the cold air is dry, not moist, it’s quite well tolerated. Some patients report experiencing a brief sensation of “pins and needles” shortly before the treatment ends, but this dissipates quickly after exiting the sauna.

How will I feel after cryotherapy?
Following cryotherapy treatments, many of our patients say they feel invigorated and energetic; many also notice some of their everyday aches and pains have subsided. You do not need to bathe before or after treatment, and you can get back to your normal activities immediately after your appointment is over.
How many treatments will I need?
There is no official regimen for cryotherapy. Some people undergo the therapy on an as-needed basis, while others choose to set up regular appointments.
Do I need to make an appointment?
You do not need an appointment for Cryotherapy. Please plan on being in our office for 15-20 minutes.
